Environmental Health Division - Consumer Protection

The Consumer Protection unit of the Environmental Health Division oversees a number of programs, which are detailed below. Applications, guidelines, and other information are located in the Resource Center at the bottom of the page.

CANCELLATION OF CITY OF MT. SHASTA BOIL WATER NOTICE

Effective June 27, 2017, the City of Mt. Shasta boil water notice has been cancelled. Please contact Siskiyou County Consumer Protection with questions at (530) 841-2116.

Food Facility Inspection Reports are posted for public review in a searchable  database.  Inspections can be searched by region or by the name of a specific food facility.

The 2017 low-cost rabies vaccination clinics are scheduled for April 13th in Dunsmuir and July 13th in Weed. See the Rabies Program information below for more details.

Environmental Health Consumer Protection Programs

This program permits and conducts routine inspections on restaurants, markets, bars, bakeries, bed and breakfast establishments, mobile food units, temporary food facilities, and cottage food operations. Food facilities are permitted in accordance with the provisions of the California Retail Food Code. Plan reviews are performed prior to initiating any new construction or remodeling. In the case of food borne illness, epidemiological investigations and reports are completed to determine the cause.

State of California Food Safety Certification Requirements

  • Each food facility shall have at least one owner or employee who has passed an approved food safety certification exam.
  • New food facilities or those who no longer have a certified owner or employee shall have sixty days to obtain the certification.
  • The certified person cannot serve as the certified person at more than one food facility at the same time.
  • The certificate expires every five years and must be re-newed.
  • The certified food safety manager is responsible for training and monitoring of the safe food handling practices of other employees.

Effective September 25, 2010, all food handlers working in California food facilities must have obtained a food handler card.

State of California Food Handler Card Requirements:

  • Food handlers are involved in the preparation, storage, or service of food in a food facility.
  • All food handlers must either have a card when hired or obtain a card within 30 days from the date of hire.
  • Food handler cards are valid for three years from the date of issuance.
  • Each food facility must maintain records documenting that all food handler employees possess a valid food handler card.  These records must be provided to the enforcement officer upon request.

The Housing Program involves inspecting individual residences, apartment complexes, motels, hotels, and mobile home parks for unsanitary living conditions, insect and vermin infestation, and inadequate garbage and rubbish removal. Housing Program inspections are conducted on a complaint basis.

The Siskiyou County Environmental Health Division is responsible for enforcing laws pertaining to rabies control in the unincorporated areas of Siskiyou County. All animal bites to humans are reportable to the Environmental Health Division and biting animals must be quarantined or tested for rabies.

All dog and cat owners are encouraged to properly vaccinate their pets. A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic will be held in Happy Camp on October 5, 2017. Please see the above flyer for more details. 2017 clinics have been completed in Dunsmuir and in Weed for the year. Tractor Supply also provides rabies vaccinations in Yreka.

Public pools, spas, and therapeutic pools are permitted and inspected on a monthly basis. Chemical records, safety equipment, and equipment rooms are also inspected. Plans are reviewed for new pools and spas prior to construction of the facility.
