Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services Open Cooling Centers Due to Extreme Heat
The Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services, in collaboration with Siskiyou County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program, has coordinated with Community Resource Centers and County Libraries to provide Cooling Centers throughout the county for those in need of relief during excessive and extreme heat. Drinking water is available at all locations.
Cooling centers are dedicated facilities or spaces that provide relief from extreme heat during periods of hot weather or heat waves. These centers are designed to offer a safe and comfortable environment for individuals who may not have access to air conditioning or who are at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses.

Tips to Avoid the Extreme Heat
- Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water.
- Never leave people or pets in a closed car on a warm day.
- If air conditioning is not available in your home, go to a cooling center.
- Take cool showers or baths.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Use your oven less to help reduce the temperature in your home.
- If you are outside, find shade. Wear a hat wide enough to protect your face.
- Avoid high-energy activities or work outdoors, during midday heat, if possible.
- Check on family members, older adults, and neighbors.
- Watch for heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
- Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot on your pet's feet.
