Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment
Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment Requirement
To make sure your child is ready for school, California Education Code Section 49452.8 requires that your child have a Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment (KOHA) by May 31 of their first school year (Kindergarten or 1st grade). This requirement helps ensure children are ready for school, promotes establishing a dental home, prevents dental decay, and lowers student absenteeism.
The dental checkup should be completed by your child’s dental provider. If your child is unable to receive a dental checkup by May 31st of their first year of school, our school-based dental services program may be able to complete the screening.
